Events and Highlights
Lunar New Year Mixer Group Shot Lunar New Year Mixer
The Lunar New Year Mixer with OC Bruins in February was a spirited night out of music, drinks, and networking. By combining our alumni networks, we made new friends while exploring new places in Orange County. We hope this event will be the first of many colloaboration events with other alumni networks, go Bruins!
Tet Festival Group Shot Orange County Tet Festival
On Feb. 22, APA UCLA and OC Bruins teamed up for a fun-filled adventure in appreciating the Vietnamese culture by celebrating Lunar New Year Festival at OC Tet in Costa Mesa. We ate a variety of delicious Vietnamese foods such as hot vit lon (balut/duck eggs), banh mi (sandwiches), and nuoc mia (sugarcane drink). Some of us never had Vietnamese signature dishes/snacks before and it was great to try new foods by adding diversity to our palates. The Festival also displayed the rich history of Vietnam and the various New Year traditions in Vietnamese culture.
JPL Group Shot JPL Tour
On March 6, APA UCLA organized a tour of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. The tour was led by APA UCLA board member Sherwin Goo. The group got to see many of the important landmarks and facilities at JPL, including the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, the Von Karman Visitor Center, the Mars Yard and the Space Flight Operations Facility. The tour revealed a lot about the effort that goes into designing and executing Earth-orbiting and interplanetary scientific research spacecrafts such as the Cassini mission to Saturn and the Mars Science Laboratory. A great time was had by all!
Eaton Canyon Hike Group Shot Eaton Canyon Hike
Several Bruins got up early one March morning for a gorgeous SoCal Spring hike. The two mile hike started at Eaton Canyon Nature Center. It was a wonderful time of experiencing nature, meeting new Bruins, and networking with one another. The UCLA 8-clap in front of the 40ft waterfall sent winning spirit to the basketball team as it reached the NCAA Sweet 16!
Hello Kitty Exhibit Hello Kitty Exhibition
In April APA-UCLA was given a warm “Hello!” at the 40th anniversary retrospective Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum. The exhibit was curated by Dr. Christine Yano of the University of Hawaii and Jamie Rivadeneira of the boutique JapanLA, which features art inspired by Hello Kitty. We were fortunate to have a private guided tour of the exhibition by the museum vice president Koji Sakai. Many childhood memories were evoked by Hello Kitty pencil cases and various Sanrio characters. After many superkawaii photos were taken, the group toasted with tea and cookies shaped like Hello Kitty at the Chado Teahouse.

Over 300 guests attended as we honored actor Randall Park as our Alumnus of the Year and awarded scholarships to amazing UCLA undergraduate and graduate students. Our distinguished guests included judges and elected officials, University and community leaders, and legendary actor George Takei. We also enjoyed entertainment provided by UCLA alumna and recording artist Larissa Lam and LCC Theater, which Randall co-founded as a UCLA student.
